Description

Help us celebrate the Sally Manzara Interpretive Nature Center and Sunfish Lake Park with nature fun and educational activities for all. Visit our staffed interpretive stations around the building on topics like honeybees, water quality and mammals. We will also have live animals with the Carpenter Nature Center and prizes for kids.


Events at Family Nature Day:

Welcome Station, kids pick up Quiz Sheets to turn in for a prize – As you go from Station to Station, check the right box on the Sheet

Beekeeping StationPaul and his friends will tell about honeybees

Mammals of the Park Station Bob and Mary will tell you who lives in the Park

Birds of the Park Station Kate will show you pictures of some of the common birds, have birdwatching checklists available, and tell you about her summer internship program

Rain Garden Station – Ami and Anna will explain why and how our rain gardens were built with assistance and reimbursement from the Valley Branch Watershed District –

St. Croix Valley Athletic Association Station – learn about biking in the Park

Apothecary Garden – Teri will tell you about herbal medicine and explain about the plants which are growing here

Geology Station -Kate will tell you why Sunfish Lake Park Rocks! and why the Park is the way it is….

Prairie Station and Prairie Plant Specimen Walk – Jarell and Ron will tell you about the 17-acre prairie restoration started in 2010 – see each of the 29 species of plants that were used in the 2010 seventeen-acre prairie restoration in Sunfish Lake Park

Pollinator StationChris will describe the value of pollinators to our life and landscape. Also visit the Monarch WayStation(c) which feeds butterfly visitors all Summer long

Live Creatures Stationsee the animals from Tamarack Nature Center 9:30 to 11:30

Story Walkread the book as you walk the trail

Buckthorn Station Larissa will tell you about the SLP buckthorn removal program, and you can play Buckthorn Croquet – a crazy game with mallets, wickets, and balls made of buckthorn

Bean Bag Toss Station – aim to get the bird into the birdhouse

Minnesota Off Road Cyclists – hear about this group’s work to keep the trails clear and safe for riders of all ages.

Messy Play Areadig the sand in the canoe, walk on the stumps, ride the turtle (very slow ride)

Water Quality Program – Don and Dllona will tell you about our new program to test water quality in the lakes and ponds of the Park, and about how you can help. Ashley will describe her internship this summer, to study the aquatic life of the Park. Ami Carrier will represent the Wild Rivers Conservancy.

Library Station – Karen will tell you about the services of the Washington County library system.

Mosquito Control Station – Kathy and Alex from the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District will tell you about their work. 

Gift Pickup and Beverages Station – hand in your completed quiz to Sue and get a prize! Coffee and Lemonade and Water available
