Strawberry season in Minnesota is one of our favorite times of year—but blink and you’ll miss it! It’s short, sweet, and absolutely worth planning for. My kids love going strawberry picking, and honestly, so do I. It’s a fun, screen-free family activity that gets us outdoors, fills our baskets (and bellies!), and gives us the most flavorful strawberries of the year.
But here’s the thing: we don’t leave the farm with just a pint or two. No, we go big—10 pounds big. And while it’s adorable to watch the kids with red fingers and sticky cheeks, the reality is: fresh strawberries don’t last long. Typically, you have just 2–3 days in the fridge before they start to go soft. So what’s a mom to do with all those strawberries?
Here are my favorite tips and strawberry recipes for making the most of your haul.
Tips for Storing Fresh πStrawberriesπ (So They Last Longer)
If you want to enjoy strawberries for more than just a day or two, proper storage is key. Here’s how I store our strawberries to keep them fresh as long as possible:
- Keep them dry and cold: Store strawberries in the refrigerator, unwashed, until you're ready to eat them. Moisture speeds up spoilage.
- Use a breathable container: Keep them in the original container or transfer to a container lined with paper towels. Leave the lid slightly open to allow air circulation.
- Store them whole: Don’t slice strawberries until you're ready to use them. Whole berries stay fresher longer.
- Check for spoiled berries: Remove any mushy or moldy berries right away so they don’t affect the rest.
- Use the crisper drawer: This part of your fridge is designed to maintain humidity—perfect for keeping berries firm and fresh.

10+ Fun & Delicious Ways to Use Fresh πStrawberriesπ
Now that you're home with a massive box of juicy red strawberries, what can you do besides eating bowl after bowl (which, let’s be honest, is a valid option)? Here are our family’s favorite ways to use strawberries before they spoil.
π Eat Them Whole
Even the tart ones taste great with a little sprinkle of sugar or topped with a dollop of homemade whipped cream. (Just whip up some heavy cream and add a pinch of sugar—so easy and way better than store-bought!)
π Strawberry Smoothies
Just toss strawberries in a blender with yogurt, milk, and maybe a banana or some frozen blueberries. It’s a healthy, kid-approved snack or breakfast on the go.
π Strawberry Juice
This one takes me back to my own childhood. Blend strawberries with a little sugar and water for a refreshing summer drink.
π Strawberry Muffins and Baked Goods
There are so many delicious and easy strawberry baking recipes out there, but muffins are one of the best ways to start—especially when baking with kids. This simple strawberry muffin recipe was passed down from my cousin and has become a favorite in our family.

π Strawberry Jam & Syrup
Homemade strawberry jam is surprisingly easy and makes toast or PB+J sandwiches extra special. You can also make strawberry syrup for pancakes, waffles, or French toast.
π Freeze for Later
Just wash, dry, and hull your strawberries, then freeze them in a single layer before transferring to a freezer bag. Perfect for future smoothies, sauces, or baking.
π Homemade Strawberry Ice Cream
If you have an ice cream maker, great! But if not, don’t worry—there are amazing no-churn strawberry ice cream recipes that are super creamy and don’t require special equipment. I’ve tried this with the kids several times, and it’s always a hit. No-Churn Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream - Dr. Maya Warren
